Ange Postecoglou Encourages Spurs Fans to Dream as Unbeaten Start Continues

Tottenham Hotspur moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night.

A Joel Ward equalizer and a fine goal from Tottenham’s top scorer Heung-min Son were enough to give Spurs all three points, although Crystal Palace struck late on, including a fine strike from Jordan Ayew.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was delighted with the visitors’ patience in a tightly contested first half and their goal after the break. He also praised his team’s pressing, which he described as the best in the league.

“I knew we had to stay patient,” Postecoglou said.” It was a test of our discipline and sticking to the soccer and that’s why I’m very happy because it’s another different way for us to win games.

On his desire for Tottenham to be the best pressing team in the league, he added: “It was probably the best part of our game so far.”

“I said this week that there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of our front three working. The one thing I can control this year is that we want to be the number one team in the competition.”

“There’s no excuse not to do the things that will help us. If you look at the running stats in the league, we’re at the top of almost all of them because we want to be an aggressive team and if it doesn’t work with the ball, we can create things without the ball.”

“We keep them physical but you have to give them a reason to run because they’re not going to run for no reason and I think the returns they’ve got in the last couple of games have given them a reason to run.”

It was another unbeaten game for Spurs, who are the only unbeaten team in the league so far this season along with North London rivals Arsenal.

Postecoglou’s side are on an eight-match winning run and are temporarily leading the table – they have played one more game than the teams around them – as the former Celtic boss continues his record-breaking start to the Premier League campaign.

It may be early in the season and too early to predict a title win, but Postecoglou wants Tottenham fans to enjoy the positive start the team has made under his stewardship.

“Let them dream,” he said, “that’s what being a soccer supporter is all about.” It’s fair to say that this team has suffered a lot, so I’m certainly not going to discourage them.

“I’m really happy today, it’s a tough place to come. We worked hard for the win but I thought we showed real discipline and focus and I was really pleased with the effort the lads put in today because I knew it was going to be a tough game for us.”
