Asia Pacific Airlines See Significant Passenger Growth in 2023, But Challenges Remain

Recovery on track: While not yet at pre-pandemic levels (72% in 2023 compared to 100% in 2019), the positive trend indicates a steady recovery. Short-haul travel saw the most significant growth, reflected in a 131% increase in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs).

Increased capacity: Airlines responded to the demand by expanding seat capacity by 106.2%, leading to a pre-pandemic average load factor of 80.9%.

Challenges ahead: Despite the positive outlook, airlines face headwinds like volatile fuel prices, a strong US dollar, and inflation. Capacity constraints and geopolitical risks also pose concerns.

Looking forward: The AAPA expects 2024 to be another strong year with a potential return to pre-pandemic passenger levels. However, they urge airlines to remain vigilant and adaptable to navigate market uncertainties.
