Brighton’s historic UEFA Cup win over Ajax, Milner says team has learned a lot

Brighton secured the club’s first win in Europe with a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the UEFA Cup on Thursday. Head coach Roberto de Zerbi led his side to an excellent game, with goals from João Pedro and Ansou Fathi helping the Seagulls to their first Group B win.

Speaking after the game, James Milner spoke of his delight at the victory and said that the team had “learned a lot” from the first three games.

Milner emphasized the importance of Brighton’s 2-0 win over Ajax, which was the club’s first win in European competition in its history. He said the team had learned a lot from their first few games in the UEFA Cup.

The game was significant for de Zerbi’s side, with Joao Pedro and Ansou Fathi both scoring to help beat the four-time European champions.

Brighton have won one, drawn one and lost one of their first three Group B games and Milner, who joined the team this summer, spoke after the game about his delight at the victory.

“It’s an important win, it’s important to get your first win after a slow start to the group stage, especially at home.” he said.

“I think if you look at Brighton’s squad you see there is a lot of quality in the team, last season’s performances weren’t a flash in the pan and they deserve a chance to play in Europe.”

“We would have liked to have had a better start to the group stage but we have improved now. As a team we have learned a lot from these three games.”

Pedro opened the scoring for Brighton near the end of the first half. At the time, Diante Lamaj parried a shot from San Lavon and the ball fell to Pedro’s feet, who pushed it into the net in front of the goal.

Fathi, who joined Brighton alongside Milner this summer, extended the lead to 2-0 in the second half when he received a teasing pass from Adlinga and calmly controlled the ball in the box before firing home.

It’s been a tough past month for de Zerbi’s men, who have gone five games without a win in all competitions. Prior to this game, they lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the Premier League.

Pedro echoed Milner’s comments, saying that Brighton should have won but won’t be too complacent as they have an important game against Fulham on Sunday.

Pedro said, “Brighton got their first win in the UEFA Cup and we gave the fans a good game this time.”

“I’m happy to score goals, play for this team and make history. We will continue to fight for Brighton.”

“We didn’t win our last two games and had a tough game against Marseille, so today I think we deserved it. You have to enjoy tonight and get ready for the Premier League game against Fulham.”

De Zerbi expressed similar sentiments after the game, admitting that his team still has a lot to improve on.

The Italian boss said, “We played a great game, we played very well, we deserved to win, maybe scoring more goals, but the most important thing is that we didn’t concede.”

“We kept zero goals conceded, which is important, but now we have an important game on Sunday and we have to be ready for it.”

“We didn’t anticipate Ajax’s tactical set-up, they defended with two strikers and we had time to understand the space. In the first half we put Gross, Adlinga and Weltman up front and in the second half we had a better understanding of the space.”

“We scored our first goal after a number of passes, we have to increase the speed of possession and reduce the number of touches per player, but we have secured Brighton’s first win in Europe. It’s a great day for our fans, the club, the owners and we are proud of them.”
