Tennessee defeats Syracuse in first round of Maui Invitational

The University of Tennessee men’s basketball team overcame early adversity to defeat Syracuse 73-56 in the first round of the Allstate Maui Invitational on Monday. Despite missing two players due to injury, Tennessee rallied from an eight-point opening deficit to pull out the victory.

Fifth-year guard Dalton Kenshitt missed nearly eight minutes of the second half with cramps, but scored a game-high 17 points to lead Tennessee State (4-0) to victory. He was 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

Kenhart was one of three Volunteers to score in double figures. Fifth-year guard Josiah Jordan-James had 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while junior forward Jonas Aidoo had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Volunteers’ defence was also a key factor in their win. They limited Syracuse to 28.6 percent shooting from the field and caused 18 turnovers.

Syracuse (3-1) was led by sophomore guard Chris Bell with 16 points. Sophomore guard Judah Mintz averaged 23.0 points and 5.0 assists for the game, but finished with just 15 points and two assists.

The Volunteers will play in the All-State Maui Invitational, taking on either No. 2 Purdue or No. 11/10 Gonzaga in Tuesday’s semifinals.
